Breast Cancer Webinar
A panel of UVA Health breast cancer doctors and researchers delivered vital information and hope to over 500 attendees who joined a webinar on Oct. 23 entitled “Breast Cancer: Latest in Diagnoses, Treatment, and Clinical Trials.”
Registrants from across the United States, as well as Canada, Spain, Singapore, and the United Kingdom, gathered online for the discussion held during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Moderated by Christiana Brenin, MD, associate professor in the Division of Hematology and Oncology, the panel featured Shayna Showalter, MD, a UVA professor of surgery in the Division of Surgical Oncology, and Trish Millard, MD, a medical oncologist and associate professor in the Division of Hematology and Oncology.
In addition to highlighting UVA Health’s nationally recognized Breast Care Program, the panelists spoke about their investigations into new, more personalized treatment plans and approaches. Two such investigations are the POWER II Trial, which explores the use of endocrine therapy as a primary treatment for early-stage breast cancer in older women, and the Precision Breast IORT Trial, which is investigating a novel, targeted approach to radiation therapy for early-stage breast cancer. Both studies are designed to treat the individual needs of each patient and avoid the over- and under-treatment that can arise from conventional approaches.
The panelists also shared insights on the emerging science linking cardiovascular health to improved breast cancer treatment outcomes and answered viewers’ questions on a range of topics.
