More Capacity for Care

UVA Health opens a new facility to treat cancer patients in Pantops.

As part of its ongoing plan to increase Virginians’ access to the highest-quality cancer care and clinical trials of promising new therapies, UVA Health has opened Cancer Care Pantops—a convenient infusion center for chemotherapy and other treatments. The first patients were seen on April 14, and a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on April 25 to formally celebrate the facility's opening.

“UVA Health Cancer Care Pantops offers a more stress-free outpatient experience for many of our patients needing regular infusions to treat their cancer,” said Thomas P. Loughran Jr., MD, director of UVA’s National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center and the F. Palmer Weber-Smithfield Foods Professor of Oncology Research and Professor of Medicine.

“As a national leader in cancer care, we are committed to driving progress in research, prevention, early detection, and treatment. We know that expanding our care options and enhancing the overall care experience through clinics like this one are vital parts of the healing journey for our patients,” said Dr. Loughran.

UVA Health continues to grow its cancer care spaces and services to meet patients’ needs across the region—a catchment area of 87 counties in Virginia and West Virginia, with an approximate population of 3.2 million. Compared to national averages, this population experiences a higher incidence or mortality rate (or both) with respect to breast, colorectal, lung, prostate, cervical, and skin cancer.

UVA Health’s main strategies for handling this challenge and increasing its capacity for care include expanding and enhancing its physical presence throughout central Virginia and beyond and growing its team of cancer providers in number, specialty, and level of expertise.

The new center in Pantops is located at 652 Peter Jefferson Parkway, and it offers free parking, 14 exam rooms, 25 infusion chairs, and a pharmacy. This new space makes it convenient for patients to fill their prescriptions and participate in clinical trials of leading-edge cancer therapies. The first patients were seen earlier this month. By the end of 2025, Cancer Care Pantops plans to add 15 more infusion chairs, for a total of 40.

Cancer Care Pantops is also the new home of UVA Health’s Hereditary Cancer Program, which previously was known as the High-Risk Breast and Ovarian Cancer Clinic. The renaming and new location reflect the program’s expanded focus on cancer screening and risk reduction options across multiple cancer types.

“With the opening of Cancer Care Pantops, we’re proud to expand our reach, ensuring that those in central Virginia have access to expert care in a space designed for comfort and convenience. This isn’t just cancer treatment. It’s about a dedicated, world-class team that makes it their life’s work to walk beside each patient, offering strength, hope, and unwavering support every step of the way,” said Wendy Horton, PharmD, MBA, chief executive officer of UVA Health University Medical Center.
