November Is Lung Cancer Awareness Month

Together, we can save lives.

Lung cancer remains one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths worldwide. In Virginia, lung cancer incidence and mortality rates are even higher than national averages. Thanks to the support of generous donors, UVA Cancer Center is making progress against the disease on multiple fronts.

  • The Community Outreach and Engagement team partners with community organizations to provide free, evidence-based education programs aimed at increasing awareness of lung cancer risk factors, decreasing disparities in health outcomes, and improving access to treatments.
  • The Comprehensive Community Grants program helps community organizations implement innovative approaches to reducing the burden of lung cancer and other diseases in the commonwealth.
  • The center created the Lung Translational Research Team (TRT) to foster and support multidisciplinary collaborations among laboratory scientists, clinical investigators, population health experts, and cancer screening researchers, uniting their efforts against lung cancer.
  • In August 2024, UVA Cancer Center became the first in Virginia to offer a new immunotherapy treatment for small-cell lung cancer. Early studies show the treatment is extending the lifespan of patients with late-stage disease. Click here to read more about this promising development.

Together, we can create a world where fewer lives are lost to lung cancer. Visit UVA Health's website for more information on lung cancer screening, treatment, and support.
